Proactively developing power generation and grid projects to meet growing demand in Southern Vietnam

16:54, 06/10/2026

Electricity demand in southern Vietnam continues to rise as manufacturing, industrial parks, and urban areas expand. In the first eight months of 2026, peak demand across the Southern Power Corporation (Ä¢¹½´«Ã½SPC) increased by 6.7%, while commercial electricity sales rose by more than 7% year-on-year.

The power sector is implementing proactive infrastructure investment, enhanced operational capabilities, and demand-side solutions to meet current demand while creating room for future growth.

Proactive investment to support growth

According to the Southern Power Corporation, all eight of its affiliated power companies recorded year-on-year growth in commercial electricity sales during the first eight months of 2026, with Vinh Long, Tay Ninh and Lam Dong posting the highest growth rates.

In Can Giuoc Commune, Tay Ninh Province, which is home to five industrial parks with nearly 500 enterprises, electricity demand for production continues to increase. Under mounting load pressure, the Can Giuoc 110kV Substation previously had only one 63MVA transformer, while the actual load frequently exceeded 80%.

To enhance its capacity to meet electricity demand, the power sector installed an additional T2 transformer. The project was accepted and commissioned on August 23, helping improve power supply to industrial parks and neighboring areas, including Can Duoc and Can Giuoc, while also meeting the N-1 reliability criterion for system operation.

Alongside ensuring power supply from power sector, industrial parks are also proactively installing additional rooftop solar power systems to enhance their energy self-sufficiency.

For industrial parks with a high proportion of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises, power supply quality and reliability are becoming increasingly important priorities. A stable power supply not only supports production activities but is also a key infrastructure requirement for attracting investment.

Flexible operations and optimized electricity demand

In anticipation of rising electricity demand, the Southern Power Corporation proactively coordinates with local authorities to develop and update demand growth scenarios, which serve as a basis for incorporating appropriate power grid projects into investment plans in line with actual needs.

Alongside infrastructure investment, the Corporation is strengthening operational management, improving system reliability, and implementing communication and guidance initiatives to help customers use electricity efficiently.

According to Mr. Bui Quoc Hoan, Deputy General Director of the Southern Power Corporation, alongside investment and technical management measures, the Corporation proactively works with customers to promote demand-side solutions.

In particular, the Southern Power Corporation encourages the development of rooftop solar power for self-production and self-consumption, while also implementing load shifting and demand response solutions.

According to the Corporation’s leadership, these measures aim to ensure an adequate, safe, and reliable electricity supply for customers while improving the efficiency and reliability of power system operations.

As electricity demand continues to grow alongside manufacturing and investment activities in southern Vietnam, proactively increasing the capacity of power grid facilities, enhancing operational capabilities, and encouraging customers to use electricity flexibly are becoming increasingly important components of the power supply assurance plan.

From upgrading substation capacity and investing in new transmission lines to implementing flexible electricity consumption solutions at enterprises, the power sector is gradually strengthening its supply capacity to meet growing demand. Proactive investment and flexible system operations not only address immediate electricity supply needs but also establish an infrastructure foundation for manufacturing, investment attraction, and economic growth in southern Vietnam in the years ahead.
